Domestic Violence Unit (DVU)
Domestic violence is a pattern of coercive behaviors intended to gain power and control over a victim. It can include willful intimidation, verbal abuse, isolation economic abuse, physical abuse, sexual assault, and/or other behaviors. While women and children are more likely to be victimized by an intimate partner, men can also be victims of domestic violence.
It is the goal of the Domestic Violence Unit in Macon County to promote victim safety and ensure the abusers are help accountable for their illegal and abusive behavior. Our office does not allow victims to "drop charges". Our office maintains sole discretion to purse criminal Prosecution if sufficient evidence exists to substantiate the charge, thus relieving the victim of responsibility. We encourage victims to contact us to discuss the case and address any concerns they may have throughout the process. The Domestic Violence Unit can also provide information about Criminal Order of Protection, Emergency Orders of Protections, and other possible services with other agencies.
