PRESS RELEASE - TELEPHONE SCAM ALERT

DATE:  November 3, 2014

Macon County State’s Attorney Jay Scott and Macon County Sheriff Thomas Schneider announced today that numerous Macon County residents, particularly senior citizens, have been the target of a telephone scam in recent days.  The callers claim to be from the Internal Revenue Service, advise the victims that they owe money to the IRS, and threaten to pursue a lawsuit against the victims unless payment is made.  These calls are a scam, and are coming from locations outside the United States.

Residents are advised to hang up if one of these calls is received, and to ignore any such answering machine messages demanding a return call.  If you suspect a scam is being attempted or has been committed, please call the Elder Fraud Hotline at 217-615-7582.  All calls are answered by State’s Attorney Jay Scott or Sheriff Thomas Schneider.
