MACON COUNTY RESIDENTS ARE BEING HEAVILY TARGETED BY THE IRS TELEPHONE SCAM
DATE: November 6, 2015
Macon County State’s Attorney Jay Scott and Macon County Sheriff Thomas Schneider announced today that Macon County residents are being heavily targeted by the IRS telephone scam. Since yesterday more than 80 calls have been placed to the Elder Fraud Hotline reporting this scam. The callers claim to be from the Internal Revenue Service, advise the victims that they owe money to the IRS, and threaten to pursue a lawsuit or to have the victims arrested unless immediate payment is made. These calls are placed from outside the United States, but through a technique known as “spoofing” they appear on Caller ID to be coming from within the country.
Residents are advised to hang up if one of these calls is received, and to ignore any such answering machine messages demanding a return call. To learn more about scams visit the State’s Attorney’s website at www.sa-macon-il.us.
